The Discord Store: A New Competitor for Steam
Steam recently released its revamped UI that added a plethora of features some of which can be used to replace Discord like Voice Chat lobbies. While voice chat lobbies were one of Discord’s original features, it has evolved a lot and now will have its own Game Store.
In a recent blog post, they talk about how they’ve upgraded their Nitro feature but more importantly will be rolling out the Store for about 50k Canadian Users. Discord describes their store as “a curated game store experience similar to one of those cozy neighborhood book shops”. This contrasts the Steam Store which is filled with games both good and bad as the Discord Store will have curated games along with recommendations from them. They also plan on helping Indie Devs with the “First On Discord” which will be games that will be exclusive to Discord for 90 days. Another great addition is the introduction of a Universal Library. It will scan all the games on your HDD and SSD and launch them. Steam, Origin, Ubisoft games can all be launched from this and it aims to reduce clutter so you can have everything in one application itself.
They’re also giving a bunch of free games to Discord Nitro subscribers. Here’s the full list:
- Saints Row: The Third
- Metro: Last Light Redux
- Darksiders: Warmastered Edition
- De Blob
- Tormentor X Punisher
- Kathy Rain
- Kingdom: New Lands
- System Shock Enhanced Edition
- Super Meat Boy
There’s a whole lot of new things so I recommend that you check out the blog post on Discord to see all the new additions and changes but it’s safe to say that Discord is slowly upping their game and plan on staying with gamers for a long time to come.
