2K Believes Microtransactions are an Unfortunate Reality of Modern Gaming
Earlier this week 2K was in the headlines because of a controversial plea to fans asking to them to let their local government know that they want Loot Boxes. They’re back in the headlines again because of statements made in a recent interview.
In an interview with TrustedReviews, NBA 2K19’s Senior Producer Rob Jones said:
“VC is an unfortunate reality of modern gaming.”
VC is the in-game currency in NBA 2K series which players had issues with since they felt the game was too grindy last year, which hindered progression mainly due to VC. They felt that they were being pushed by the game to use real money to purchase VC because the grind felt too long.
“Every game, at some point, in some way has currency and they’re trying to get additional revenue from each player that plays the game. You know, the question has to be when does it feel like it’s a straight money grab versus when does it feel like it’s value-added, right? We know nowadays that most people don’t have the patience to work their way to the top. They just wanna be there right away.”
Jones wanted to make sure that players understood that the inclusion of VC is not a cash grab but a way of getting to the top if you don’t want to spend the time grinding. It is a way of adding value which can be bought by players. He goes on to state that if players want to purchase items that require a bit of grinding or are just outside of their reach, it is “A choice, not a force”.
After DLCs became an industry standard and a way for devs to release half-finished games, Microtransactions have also become mainstream much to the dismay of many gamers. While they feel that games should not be “Pay-2-Win”, they don’t mind the inclusion of buying in-game items if there’s a viable way of getting it without buying it for real money and without it being incredibly frustrating.
